The Chanel Classic Flap History:

The Classic Chanel Flap Bag was originally designed by ‘Coco” Chanel herself, or otherwise known as Gabrielle Bonheur, who had been creating handbags for about 25 years before she created the classic flap. This bag was born in 1955 and the idea behind it was for comfort. ‘Coco’ decided to create a bag that would allow a woman to keep their hands free while carrying their bag, as in that time, women usually carried bags in their hands.

The Classic Flap was the first bag women could carry on their shoulders and was originally named the Chanel 2.55,. The name of the bag originated from the date of its creation, February (2), in 1955 (55). This bag has since been redesigned with not many changes. It’s most iconic revision was made by the ‘King of Chanel’ himself, Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld changed the classic square of the Chanel 2.55 to its now famous interlocking CC clasp.

The Chanel 2.55

‘Coco’ designed the Chanel 2.55 with all-chain straps. Overtime, resources went scarce and different chains were introduced, such as: a leather-woven chain straps. In 1955, the bag went for $220 and has since increased to $6,000. It is still holding its value.

Interesting Facts about the Chanel Classic Flap

The Classic Flap bag is an embodiment of ‘Coco’ Chanel’s life with minor details in it that honor her past. In the original Chanel 2.55, the hue of the inside leather that was a dark burgundy. There are Classic Flap’s as well that feature the same burgundy color. ‘Coco’ chose this color as a homage to the Catholic orphanage where she grew up. This orphanage is where ‘Coco’ learned how to sew. Another unique feature of the bag is the uncommon, hidden zipper compartment. ‘Coco’ Chanel created this compartment to allegedly hide love letters.

‘Coco’ also added another little bit of her personal life into another one of her bags. This bag being the Chanel Boy Bag, which is a part of the flap bag line. ‘Coco’ Chanel named the Boy Bag after Boy Capel, her longtime lover.

If It’s Worth It

The Classic Chanel Flap bag has seen many renditions and comes in many different styles. These styles can range from diamond quilted leather, patent leather, and even tweed in some limited edition styles. The Classic Flap bag holds its value well. It actually has a history of increasing in value over the years. The price has increased by 13.5% just this year alone.

In addition, the Chanel Classic Flap is not only a timeless beautiful piece, but also a great investment. Regardless of its price increase, this bag with definitely hold it’s value for years to come and be a great addition to your handbag collection.

My Biggest Recommendation:

Firstly, I generally recommend that when purchasing a bag like this for investment, you should avoid bright colors and textures. Generally as these patterns get old over time, however, this is not the case with the Chanel Classic Flap. If you can find a textured, bright colored, or funky looking Classic Flap bag, go for it! These are actually the most unique kinds of Chanel bags you can find and make for great investment pieces.

Typically, these will be more sought after and desired due to the fact that they might be special collections. As there has been an increase in popularity for the Classic Flap, I would recommend searching on some pre-loved consignment sites for unique pieces and a good deal.
